What you need to know to get a MA Driver’s License

Massachusetts Driver Licenses

(NOTE: Before you get your driving license, you MUST get a social security card.)

  1. You must first get a learner’s permit. You can download the application for your permit here:

http://www.massrmv.com/rmv/license/5classd.htm  or go to nearest RMV office.

RMV locations can be founds at https://www.massrmv.com/BranchMap.aspx.

You need to get a study book for your driver’s permit test. Here is the link for the Massachusetts study book: http://www.massrmv.com/rmv/dmanual/. You can also stop by the Registry of Motor Vehicles (driver’s license office) and pick up a book. I urge you to study it and get very familiar with our state’s driving laws. It is a requirement of Massachusetts for you to take a written test and an eye exam in order to obtain your permit.

Please bring the following to the RMV to get a permit

  • DS 2019
  • I-94 card(instructions on how to print out I-94 information from the website cbp.gov/I94.)
  • Passport
  • Social security card and/or letter – This letter can be printed from the au pair’s extranet account under the placement information tab.
  • Proof of address—i.e. bank statement with your name and address in Massachusetts
  • (Note: you will need to know your weight in pounds and height in feet to get permit.)
  • You will take a quick eye exam and written test that has 25 multiple choice questions. Once you pass they ask for $$ (need cash or check i.e.no credit cards) and they take your picture and issue you a permit.

 Schedule a Road Test

Once you have passed the written permit test and completed all necessary JOL requirements, you may schedule a road test online. If you wish, you may use our automated phone system to schedule a road test by calling 857-368-8010. You may NOT make a road test appointment at an RMV branch.

If you wish, you may use our automated phone system to schedule a road test by calling 857-368-8010.

Online Payment of Road Test/License Fees

Class D and M road test and license fees can be paid online using the Pay My Road Test/License Fees transaction. This can be done before or after you pass the road test and will eliminate the need to visit an RMV branch. After passing the road test and if all fees have been paid, your permit will be stamped in the Validation section and immediately serve as a temporary license until the permanent license is received.

Vehicle Requirements for Class D Road Tests

For all road tests, you are required to supply a properly equipped, legally registered and insured vehicle that has a valid inspection sticker. The vehicle must be acceptable to the examiner. The examiner must be able to reach the vehicle’s emergency brake or foot brake. Any vehicle with a center console that does not have an emergency brake as part of the console cannot be used.

If the vehicle is rented, you must provide the rental agreement and written permission on the rental company’s letterhead authorizing use of the vehicle for a road test.

Sponsor Requirements

To take the road test, you must bring a sponsor who is at least 21 years old, has at least one (1) year of driving experience and possesses a valid driver’s license issued by his or her home state. Foreign license holders are not eligible to be sponsors.

  1. Obtaining your Class D License

After passing the road test and if all fees have been paid, your permit will be stamped in the Validation section and immediately serve as a temporary license until the permanent license is received.

If you have not pre-paid the fees, you must pay the fees online using the Pay My Road Test/License Fees transaction (with no need to visit an RMV branch) or bring the stamped, signed permit, a completed Class D, M, or D/M License and ID Card Application, and the appropriate fees to any RMV full service office to get your license.
